Anthony Urbano, the Man Behind Oh Antonio
KS: What propelled you to leave behind a career in structural engineering for the life of a fashion influencer?
AU: My structural engineering job was fine but I was craving more excitement and creativity in my life. I started blogging at first just for fun and to have a creative outlet and then my blog eventually opened up the door for me to leave my engineering job.
KS: Can you give us a brief overview of what you’re doing now in the fashion industry?
AU: Right now I’m working full time on overseeing my website and brand “Oh Anthonio.” As part of that I’m creating content for a variety of brands in the fashion and lifestyle spaces. I’m also traveling a lot to shoot on location. I still shoot, edit, style, and produce all my shoots on my own. It takes a lot of work to produce a steady stream of content at the level of quality that brands want to see 365 days a year across a website and all my social media platforms, but I love it!
KS: Does your background as a professional engineer influence your fashion preferences in any way?
AU: I think visually I’m drawn more to patterns and prints perhaps because I’m used to staring at architectural plans and drawings all day. I think also my attention to detail as an engineer is also at play when I look at clothing. I’m always looking at the small details that make pieces unique.
KS: You wear everything from Hawaiian shirts to men’s suits. But what type of clothing do you think suits you best?
AU: It really depends on my mood and the season. For the most part I like to keep things casual - sweats and hoodies in the fall and loose button downs in the spring - but always something with a lot of color. There’s also those moments when I love putting on a suit just to switch things up, and who doesn’t feel confident in a suit, right?
KS: What are your go-to wardrobe staples?
AU: My style has changed so much over the past 8 years since I’ve been blogging, but I think a great pair of jeans, Converse sneakers, a wool coat, a trench - classics like that will last forever. I still have blue, black, and white denim, and coats from day one, that I still wear and have never gotten rid of.
KS: If you will be asked to style a very important person, what is it that you’d never let him wear? Likewise, what is the styling trick that you can’t afford to miss out on.
AU: Hmmm I think it depends on the person and I think the trick is really to just see what the client likes and what their personality is like and then bring that out and elevate it in a really dope outfit. Never let them wear something they don’t feel comfortable in.
KS: Perhaps, there isn’t a look that you can’t pull off. Are there important notes that you can share to our readers when mixing and matching clothing or when reinventing their look?
AU: I think a lot of people tend to think “oh I can’t pull that off” or “that’s not for me” and end up wearing the same clothes or sticking to the same style that they’re comfortable in. If you’re trying to reinvent your look then experiment a little. Try something on. See how you feel. So how it looks. Then decide if you like it or not.
